However, it is important to recognize that, despite the changes, the four mechanisms of writing can still be enacted in various forms in electronic documents and presentations, e-mails, and blogs. In our view, successful examples of emotional expression, knowledge development, and community building with todayâs media are largely explained by the enactment of writingâs mechanisms. While new media might afford new features and practices, we always have the freedom to use the technology in different ways. Indeed, people tend to write shorter e-mails with little or no relationship management; and they tend to reply immediately to e-mails without taking the time to think about it; and yes, there is a propensity to use cut and paste while working on a document. However, there is no determinism inscribed in the technologies, and the accompanying practices afforded by the features of the media are flexible. For example, one can take the time to draft an e-mail and send it a couple of hours or even a day later. One can also decide to start a new document from scratch. Moreover, as we will see in the following chapters, some of the features of new media can facilitate the enactment of the writing mechanisms. Finally, beyond the variations introduced by the new media, there are also a lot of similarities, not only in the enactment of the writing mechanisms but also in the range of genres that one can find in letter writing and in e-mail writing (see the sidebar Letter and E-mail Genres). In the following section, we will revisit the four mechanisms of writing introduced in Chapter 2 and show how their enactment is supported, or hindered, by new media.
